Alternative Compensation Plan

Alt Comp Online

What is Edina Alt Comp?

The Edina Alternative Compensation Plan is an initiative targeted toward increasing student achievement and improving instructional practice. This plan is a partnership among Edina Public Schools, Education Minnesota/Edina (teachers’ association), and the Minnesota Department of Education. This local initiative is part of the state program known as Q Comp.

How does Edina Alt Comp increase performance and student achievement?

Edina Alt Comp systematically aligns district student achievement goals, building and program student achievement goals, and individual teacher goals.

The program also requires each teacher to develop an annual professional growth plan. Once teachers have created focused goals, teachers work with instructional coaches throughout the year to ensure the goals match district-wide standards.

The efforts have an emphasis on improving instructional practices and student achievement.

What are the specific components of the plan?

Edina Alt Comp has three key components:

  • Providing teachers with trained instructional coaches to assist them in improving their instructional practices
  • Requiring teachers to meet professional growth goals and student learning goals to receive an incentive payment
  • Identifying measurable student achievement goals at each site and for each teacher, with performance incentives associated with each goal

How is this plan funded, and how long will it be in effect?

This plan is funded through a two-year grant from the State of Minnesota for approximately $3 million. A local levy over two years will also provide support funding for the program. Edina Public Schools and Education Minnesota/Edina have made a commitment to this program though 2012.
