Overview

 

Program Services

  • Review job descriptions and current hiring practices
  • Ensure the GES Coordinator has joint authority and responsibility with each principal for the Gifted Education Program
  • Increase Gifted Education Services Coordinator position from .5 to 1.0 FTE
  • Provide a 1.0 FTE Gifted Resource Teacher at each building beginning in the 2006-07 school year
  • Place the GES program on the Teaching and Learning four-year curriculum review cycle
  • Review district policy for subject/grade acceleration
  • Investigate GES Certificate Cohort

Identification

  • Keep the flowchart but clarify, for parents and teachers, the identification process
  • Streamline the identification process to allow more time for service
  • Enhance the breadth of the student profile for Gifted Education Services, and expand data availability within the district

Elementary

  • Create and implement a scope and sequence for enriched language arts and mathematics for Grade 3–5 students identified as eligible for gifted education services
  • Implement structured curriculum-based flexible grouping for language arts and/or mathematics in Grades 3–5 in each elementary school
  • Group by grade level those Grade 3–5 students eligible for Type 3 services in cluster classrooms (5–7 /classroom), and group together by grade level those Grade 1–2 students who demonstrate advanced academic performance

  • Curriculum: Enhance curriculum for all enriched courses
  • Staff Development: Train teachers in the instructional strategies that reflect best practices for gifted learners
  • Service Delivery: Articulate and strengthen service delivery options for Grade 6 gifted learners
  • Leadership: Assess overall Gifted Education Services leadership in terms of reporting and responsibility

  • Ensure academic support for the transition to high school
  • Create academic pathways for earlier access to high school coursework for qualified students
  • Encourage additional/increased preparation and participation for AP math/science coursework
