14 Edina High Seniors named National Merit Semi-Finalists

Edina, Minn., Sept. 15, 2011 –Edina Public Schools is pleased to announce that 14 Edina High School seniors are among the 16,000 students chosen nationwide to compete for the reputable National Merit Scholarship. Nearly 1.5 million students entered the Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as the initial screening process.

The following Edina students were named National Merit Semifinalists: Alyson Beveridge, Ekaterina Botchkareva, Rebecca Brookes, Sophia Charan, Allen Fang, Tyler Gieseke, Molly Little, Anne Schulberg, Miriam Sergent-Leventh, Krzysztof Stankiewicz, Nora Steinhagen, Meghana Vasireddy, Zhonghao Wang and Xue Zhang.

It is estimated that 90 percent of semifinalists will advance to the finalist level. Of those students, approximately half will be selected as Merit Scholarship recipients. Edina semifinalists who want to reach the next level must receive an endorsement from Principal Dr. Bruce Locklear and complete a detailed application. Edina High School counselors will assist in the application process, which includes writing a descriptive essay and submitting a resume outlining past and present involvement in leadership and community activities.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) is an independent, non-profit organization that operates without government assistance. According to official NMSP documents, “Scholarships awarded through the program are underwritten by NMSC’s own funds and by approximately 440 business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSC’s goals of honoring the nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence."

Edina Public Schools wishes each contestant the best of luck as they take the steps necessary to advance to the finalist level.
