Nyberg named Interim Athletic Manager
Edina High School chemistry teacher brings extensive coaching experience to part-time position
Last week, Chad Nyberg was just teaching chemistry at Edina High School. As of Monday, he gave up half of his teaching duties to assume the responsibilities of Interim Athletic Manager. As such, Nyberg will oversee the day-to-day operations of the school’s athletic and activities department, to include assuring student and team eligibility per the Minnesota State High School League and working with fellow Lake Conference Athletic Directors.
“We are happy to have Chad on board,” said Dr. Bruce Locklear, Edina High School Principal. “He brings a historical perspective from his time as a teacher at Edina High School and years of experience as a head coach.”
Teaching science at Edina High School since 1999, Nyberg will continue to teach two sections of chemistry in addition to the part-time interim athletic manager position.
“I am excited about this opportunity as it feels like a good fit for my career interests and passions,” said Nyberg. “Some of my best school memories are of my participation in athletics and activities. It is one of the reasons I went into education in the first place – to help other students have those same great experiences.”
In addition to teaching, Nyberg has coached both girls’ and boys’ hockey at several area high schools, including Edina, Bloomington Jefferson, and Eastview. His most recent stint was as the head boys’ hockey coach at Hopkins High School, a post he held for six years. Nyberg also has experience coaching football and softball at various levels. He earned a B.A. in chemistry from St. Olaf College, an M.S. in school administration from Minnesota State University – Mankato, and his administrative licensure from St. Mary’s University.
“I’ve often thought about my next career step and what that may look like. The opportunity to serve in a part-time, interim capacity is a great way to see if I am a good fit for the job and if it is something I want to pursue full-time. It’s kind of a like test driving a car before you buy it,” Nyberg said. “I am fortunate that this opportunity arose when it did and that I get to do it in a familiar environment, knowing well the Edina students, staff and community.”
The appointment of Nyberg fills the remaining leadership vacancy in Edina High School’s athletic department. Last month the District hired Patrick Rock as interim athletic coordinator. Rock is responsible for event management, coaches’ trainings, and assisting activity site managers with student behavior at events. Nyberg will work with Rock on troubleshooting and other department management issues. In addition, Locklear continues to be involved in the leadership of the department, assisting Rock and Nyberg with their new roles.
“It is great to be at full speed with the department now,” Locklear said of Nyberg’s appointment. “We will continue to assess this new model of athletic department leadership to determine how best to proceed in the future. But in the meantime, we are fortunate to have two individuals who are committed to the success of our student athletes both in the classroom and on playing field, and that is what is most important.”
