Immunizations
Minnesota Statute 121A.15 requires that all children must be immunized against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, Hepatitis B and Varicella. There are exceptions. Immunization dates or notorized forms are required before a child enters school. More information about immunization requirements.
Early Childhood Developmental Screening
Early Childhood Developmental Screening is one of the required components for entrance into kindergarten.
If your child has already completed the Early Childhood Developmental Screening through the Edina Public Schools, no further action is required. Your child’s screening record will be delivered to his/her elementary school prior to the start of the kindergarten school year.
If your child has been screened in another school district, or if your medical doctor has completed a standardized assessment, submit the records by December 2011 to:
Kathryn Hagen
Early Childhood Special Education
Edina Public Schools
5701 Normandale Road
Edina, MN 55424
If your child has not been screened, you will need to schedule an appointment and complete the screening before your child can start school. Information regarding screening can be found on the Edina Public Schools website, www.edina.k12.mn.us. From the main screen, click the Screening link found in the Registration section on the left side of the screen. Screenings are conducted throughout the school year on an appointment basis and take approximately one hour.
You may choose to have your child not participate in this screening. If you do not want your child screened, you must provide us with a signed, dated statement that you are a conscientious objector to the Early Childhood Screening program.
If you wish additional information, or have any questions, please contact the Early Childhood Screening Secretary at 952-848-4299 or visit our website.
Orientation Meetings to Your Neighborhood School
Each principal will be scheduling orientation meetings either later this spring or in August. More information will be coming directly from the schools.
My child is not coming to the Edina Schools for kindergarten this year
If this decision is made in your family, it is very helpful to the district if you would just call your neighborhood school and advise them of your decision. If you wish to enter the Edina Schools at a later time, just come to the Welcome Center, Edina Community Center Room 171.
AM/PM Assignments
After the January 26 registration day, school secretaries make follow-up calls to those on the census list but who have still not registered. Principals confer with transportation officials and eventually make AM/PM determinations taking into account neighborhoods, student safety, and transportation efficiency. You can expect to receive a letter from the principal by April 30. If you have special circumstances which would cause a specific AM/PM assignment, please bring or mail those requests in writing to your home school office. (Kindergarten children are in school half-days because the state legislature funds only half-day instruction for them.) Please note that if you request a change from your assigned AM/PM session, transportation to and/or from school becomes your family's responsibility.
Class Size
Kindergarten classrooms average about 20 students per teacher.
Teacher Assignments to Buildings
Staffing is usually completed by June 1.
Class List
Because of changes made throughout the summer, class lists are not finalized until mid-August. Specific teacher assignments are then mailed to you.
School Times
Options for Kindergarten Families
Kindergarten families have two options: Neighborhood school or French Immersion. Continuous Progress is yet another option beginning in first grade even though you may apply for it in kindergarten.
French Immersion
French Immersion is an option for families which began in 1991. Students learn the basic skills but are taught in the French language. Because of the advancing skill level of students, entrance to the program is in kindergarten. It is located in the Edina Community Center and is called Normandale Elementary School. The program is run on a cost-neutral basis (i.e. no additional costs).
Continuous Progress Program
Students may enter Continuous Progress (CP) beginning in first grade. Students work in multi-age families and stay with a teacher for up to three years. It is possible to enter the program at any grade level. The program is located at both Countryside and Highlands Schools.
Parent Involvement
Each school has several opportunities for parent involvement. You will begin to receive some of this information at Kindergarten Registration Day.
Specific Information about Your Neighborhood School
Parents often have specific questions about their neighborhood school. These questions are answered during the orientation session or in a parent handbook. Visit a school website using links on our Contact Us page.
Additional Information
For additional information, please contact Mary Manderfeld, Director of Enrollment & School Improvement Planning at 952-848-4961 or a building principal.
